By Khalid Amayreh in occupied Palestine
"Dear General-Secretary, ladies and Gentlemen: As-salamu Aalaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh (Peace be upon you)
I am speaking to you today in the aftermath of the recent genocidal onslaught launched by Israel against our helpless and unprotected people in the Gaza Strip.
Some of you might be prompted to think that I am indulging in excessive exaggeration when I speak of a genocidal onslaught.
But I am not. Otherwise, how else can we describe a condition where hundreds of ultra-advanced war planes rain missiles and laser-guided bombs from high altitudes on apartment buildings, homes, and civilian neighborhoods packed with men, women and children?
Yet, this is exactly what Israel has done¸ murdering, maiming and incinerating thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians and utterly destroying tens of thousands of buildings.
Don't listen to the Israeli propaganda about rockets falling on their towns. These rockets are almost innocuous weapons, as evident from the extremely few casualties and the little damage they inflicted.
In the final analysis, when there are four or five casualties on one side and 20,000 on the other side, we are not really talking about a war, we are actually talking about a massacre.
Ladies and gentlemen: what Israel has done to Gaza this summer defies linguistic description. Indeed, like many of you and other honest men and women around the world, I really don't understand why the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of the holocaust do this to us every two or three years? Do they want to reassure themselves of their masculinity?
Do they want to prove they are stronger than us? Do they want to demonstrate to us that they are the masters and we are the slaves? Are they cannibalistic animals or irredeemably sadistic thugs? Even wild animals in the jungle don't overkill.
I know that what I am going to say will generate uproar in some quarters. But we must call the spade a spade, especially when we see the figurative implement in the hands of our grave-diggers, and I am not speaking metaphorically.
Israel is simply emulating Nazi Germany, very much thanks to your chronic silence, lack of resolve, shocking indifference and shameful acquiescence to Israeli criminality and fascism. I don't care that jeers, boos and gestures of disapproval come from here and there. The more important thing is that one has to be honest and faithful to one's conscience, irrespective of any other considerations. Moral correctness must always come before political correctness.
To be sure, I am not claiming that millions of Palestinians have been incinerated and murdered in Israeli concentration camps. None the less, I do accuse Israel of bringing Auschwitz to every Palestinian home, street, and neighborhood.
Many of you may have watched the pornographic devastation in Gaza. But for those who haven't, I urge them to just look at these pictures.
Ladies and Gentlemen: Don't raise your eyebrows when I compare the latest Israeli blitzkrieg in Gaza with the holocaust.
In the final analysis, there is no difference of substance between sending people to gas chambers and raining bombs and missiles on them from air, land and sea.
Besides, a holocaust is not only about the number of victims. It is also about an outrageous mentality, it is about brazen racism and a nefarious ideology that views the lives of non-Jews as expendable and having no sanctity.
I am not trying to demonize anyone. I know there are honest and conscientious Jews who reject outright Israel's evil behavior. I salute these people for their humanity and morality. At the same time, I would be betraying my conscience if I failed to state the obvious, namely that the state of Israel has been behaving very much like Nazi Germany did several decades ago.
Israel has been building settlements on our land since time immemorial. The Nazis called it Lebensraum; the Israelis call it Greater Israel. The Israelis have been murdering our people and destroying our homes and confiscating our land. And when we try to defend ourselves, they waste no time calling us terrorists. Yes, some of our people have regrettably resorted to violence in this bitter encounter with evil Zionism. But ours has always been and continues to be the violence of the oppressed, not the violence of the oppressor.
The American-English poet W.H. Auden said:
I and the public know,
What all school children learn,
Those to whom evil is done,
Do evil in return.
I am not justifying violence. I am only saying that the superior violence of the oppressor makes the lesser violence of the victim inevitable.
Even here in America, American children are taught at an early age Patrick Henry's iconic words "give me liberty or give me death".
Ladies and gentlemen: Israel mendaciously claims it desires peace in the region.
But in all honesty I ask each and every one of you: Does a state that truly seeks peace builds hundreds of colonies on its neighbor's land?
Does a state that truly seeks peace with its neighbors transfer hundreds of thousands of its citizens to live on land that belongs to another people?
Ladies and gentlemen: we have been negotiating with Israel for over 20 years now. During that period, successive Israeli governments exploited the negotiations in order to build tens of thousands of settler units, all at the expense of our people. Does this behavior reflect good will and a genuine desire for peace?
Now, 20 years after the Oslo Agreement, Israel has effectively decapitated whatever remaining chances for the establishment of a viable and territorially contiguous Palestinian state in the West Bank.
We had recognized Israel, even without receiving a reciprocal Israeli recognition of a Palestinian state. And, as a result, we incurred every conceivable castigation and insinuation of treason from our people. Yet, instead of ending its evil occupation of our land and people, Israel kept up its lebensraum policy, while relentlessly babbling about terror. But, my friends, is there a greater terror than keeping 5 million people thoroughly haunted by the nightmare of foreign military occupation.
The occupation is nothing less than an act of rape. So, I ask you how much longer our people must endure the brutal ugliness of the Jewish Zionist mentality.
The occupation is a kind of evil that transcends reality. Even the pettiest things that you take for granted in your respective countries are formidable challenges for us thanks to this nightmare
At the end of my speech, I would like to say that we Palestinians have survived as a people despite history, an unkind history by all means. But it is also true that we also owe our continued survival to the good-will of the international community. So please, don't let us down.
I say don't let us down because there are influential people in Israel today, some of them in government, who wish the world would go into a slumber or take a nap so that Israel would gang up on us and finish us once and for all. They are only awaiting the right opportunity to carry out this satanic final solution. These are no phobic fears on my part. On the contrary, they are real and realistic scenarios entertained by many Israelis.
Again, please don't give them this opportunity; don't allow them to realize their morbid goals. Keep your eyes focused on Palestine."
